Confirmation and recolour update from Stina to Mars via email:

This statement (see previous post) is correct. I wrote it today, after speaking with Thomas from TSR on the phone regarding this.

Depending what technique and program you are using, I guess most objects are recolour-friendly.

Please note that this File Share Policy is just for Secret Sims alone and not for all TSR objects. Although free, TSR still prefers you download directly from their site

It IS more than a little ambiguous. I guess we'd have to email her for specifics.

Since I was veeeeery curious about this, I sent Stina an email about this and asked to clear it up whether cloning is allowed, and this is what she wrote back:

Quote:
I haven’t given out any new instructions about cloning. All files are now
owned by TSR and this is their descision…

There was an argument about files that are not available for download at
TSR, if users can share these files via email, and that, I have given my
permission to.

I hope I cleared this out for you.

I have no legal right to decide about cloning cause I do no longer own the
old SecretSims files.

So, she isn't the right one to ask. Since I absolutely don't want to get involved with TSR, I'll give up on this. *sigh*

TSR might let you do re-colors if you put them up at TSR.

Does anyone know if there was an update on this? Lately I've seen several Secret Sims recolors and wondered if TSR has allowed recoloring?

Might they be of objects done before the Secret Sims stuff was exclusive to TSR? Did they have readme giving credit?

That's what I was thinking too because I know Secret Sims did allow cloning when she had her own site. However, when her stuff went to TSR she actually sold the rights to the stuff, so her policies are now null and void and it's their policy that matters. Still, there are lots of those files made before around.

I know that the policy has changed many times over the years, and I am ever hopeful that some of my favorite Secret Sims objects will become available for my recoloring pleasure...
Insofar as read mes, I ended up d/l some objects (these are objects from a recent website update) just to see if there was a read me attached, and the only thing I found was a "base by Secret Sims" in the object description. I might see what I can get out of TSR, information wise.

I found this notice on the Secret Sims website via the Wayback Machine. It was posted just after Stina moved to TSR.

Quote:
Legal notice.
As of today, July 3:d 2004, the permission to clone secretsims file is now revoked.
This means that you can no longer clone and upload secretsims objects to your website.
Please respect this!
This does not affect files that you have already made and uploaded to your website.
Those can still remain online :)

Yes, that is what I remember from July 2004 also.
Great Sally for doing the digging!

I actually asked Steve (Bonham, owner of TSR) about this very issue a couple of years ago because I had (still have) several retextured Secret Sims sets I want to put for download.

He said to me that with Sims 1 stuff on free rotation (yes, that's how long ago I asked LOL) then it is entirely up to the creator whether or not cloning is allowed. He said nothing about just uploading it to TSR, and said "cool" when I mentioned it was going to go on my site.

Then, in my usual bunny fashion of appear/disappear, I never got round to mailing Stina to ask for her permission, and that was the end of that.

Maybe someone could ask Steve if this still holds true, and if so, ask Stina for her thoughts? I would offer but I think I am about to disappear again shortly. sad

***bump*** Does anyone know who to contact about recoloring SecretSims objects? I did talk to Stina a couple of years ago regarding recolors but I don't have an email to verify it. Contacting TSR worries me. They are strict about the copyright stuff there. jfade's psycho

Since they are on TSR I wouldn't clone her stuff since TSR are real protective of their stuff...

You know - loads of the Secret Sims objects were actually created from free 3D objects that can be downloaded and used for totally new Sims objects ...wink

Here is an example:
