Here is a list of sites that offer free textures. Some of them have credit requirements, so check the terms of use for each one.

I find that for skinning, I use computer generated seamless textures a lot less than I use bits of digital photos that I find all over the internet.

For example, I made the belt and hanging cruxifex for a medieval dress by taking a picture of a rosary for sale online from a religious supplies store, and moving the parts around, practically bead by bead.

Here's a link to a site I found today. Great pictures for fur and leather, which can be difficult to skin successfully.

As I understand copyright law, using bits of images in a collage fashion is totally legal. Especially since I'm not making a cent from the final product!

I just found a fabric site with picture samples of Hawaiian patterns. I haven't seen many designs like this before. I think I will be using a few of these for swimsuits and summer clothes. Their material is beautiful.

A snippet from Madoria's update announcement of April 12, 2007:

Madoria wrote:
Well, that particular "texture " is a pic of a cotton fabric from either

or

But they change their stuff regulary so i cant say that that particular pattern is there now.
Those pages are not really for textures - one can't use it as is - one have to make it seamless or repetive pattern oneself.

It is not as convinient as the Fat Strawberry that has patterns and textures that is made for the puter.

Another fave puter textures is:

scroll down to see the categories
They have fantastic tiled patterns.

Fat strawberry doesn't seem to be fully up - ie you can get to the home page but none of the links to other pages are working. sad

Here is a site for paper with interesting textures. They may not be tileable (they probably aren't) but they're quite pretty. Many oriental style patterns.

I use this place a lot:

http://www.interiormall.com/index.html

I make my skins exclusively in The Sims Creator-I like it, works extremely well for me. To get good results, have a good look at the swatches you've chosen in your graphics program-they can usually be improved with a bit of fiddling. Keep patterns simple and in .jpg format. Most tartans need to be cleaned up and then shrunk to either 40x40 or 32x32 pixels to repeat the pattern correctly. Same with a stripe. I got this result with a stripe at 40x40:

You can also make your own patterns with a graphics program, stripes, checks, and such...and also change patterns you already have with a 'colorize' tool for more variety. Most fabrics also benefit from a bit of color deepening.

Really, what I generally do is put a search in Google's Image section and then just save the thumbnail (you'll have to give it a name or number). I figure if it looks halfway decent in the 100x100 thumb, it'll stand a good chance of looking good a bit smaller in Creator or other applications.

A site where you can design and generate your own tartan patterns, or download those made by others. Great tool. They also have a link to their Stripe Generator at the bottom of the homepage. :)

here's a site I found that has images as well as 3d stuff for object making.

http://www.sharecg.com take care to read the individual licenses, as some are unlimited use, some non commercial use and some use only with credit.

This site is devoted to colour - you can browse colours, or palettes or patterns.

http://www.colourlovers.com/

However I'm still trying to figure out if you can use for eg, their patterns freely, I can't find that info anywhere on the website.

BUT it does give the rgb values for colours, so if you really like a colour you can recreate it.

i FOUND IT:

Quote:
Can I use the colors found in palettes and patterns on my blog or in my work?

You can use the colors found in a palette or a pattern however you want. Note that some users would love to know you've used their colors so don't be shy. :)

Can I use the palettes and patterns found on ColourLovers.com on my blog or in my work?

Palettes as they are displayed on the site and colorings of patterns are licensed under an Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike Creative Commons License. You can read a simplified version of this license at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/.

Pattern templates i.e. the original pattern files are copyrighted. If you want to use them for commercial purposes, you will need to find who created the pattern and contact them to see what their terms of use are.

To see if the pattern you want to use has been made by CL or not, open a pattern page then check the description area ("About This Pattern"). If the pattern wasn't created by ColourLovers.com, the name of the creator and a link to their website will be displayed at the bottom.
Most patterns not created by ColourLovers.com are listed at the end of this comment.

But what about my own patterns?

Unless you're the person who created the pattern template, none of these patterns are yours. You simply color them so the same rules apply. :)

I'm still unsure about something. What should I do?

Don't hesitate to contact the CL team to know if you may or may not do something.

List of patterns which weren't created by CL. It may not be complete as new patterns are added all the time.
