|What is the Apartment Hack?
The apartment hack, invented by Inge Jones at Simlogical, is a way to divide a single lot into a number of separate 'living units' - like in an apartment building.
The system uses tokens and a controller to mark a room as belonging to a specific apartment. Using the tokens, you can divide the lot into up to four living units.
Special 'apartment hacked' front doors then make sure that only the Sims who live in that apartment can enter.
A full tutorial, with lots of pictures, can be found on the website of the Secret Society of Woobsha:
What makes Apartment Items different from ordinary objects?
These items are designed to check for tokens in the room they're in. When there is a token in the room, the items will only be 'visible' to the Sims belonging to that apartment. This way, every Sim will cook on his own stove and use his own toilet.
Without the token, Sims will bang their heads against the locked apartment doors to use their neighbours' bathroom, if they happen to have more attractive plumbing fixtures.
If there aren't any tokens in the room, the objects will behave just like ordinary objects would, as long as the token and controller files are still somewhere in your Downloads or UserObjects folder.
