|One especially dumb thing about Windows is that filename extensions are often hidden by default. (I have no idea what the Microsoft people were smoking when they did this , or why they they didn't use a "protect extensions from editing" option instead that still kept them visible.) Here's how to make file extensions visible, if they aren't already.* Click the thumbnails for larger views.
Open My Computer (or Windows Explorer), then go to the Tools menu > Folder Options.
A window will pop up. Go to the View tab and scroll down to "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck this box! Then click OK.
After that, filename extensions will be visible instead of hidden.
*The steps are the same in Windows XP, Vista, and 7. If I remember correctly, they were the same in Windows 95, 98, and Me as well.
