First you need to decide what it is you'd like to do.

Would you like to recolor a bed? Almost everyone interested in recoloring objects wants to start here and it has turned more people away from recolor than you'll ever want to know.

The secret is to start easy with one or two easy projects THEN try the big nasty old bed that's going to make you pull your hair out within a few hours.

Want to add clothing worn by your favourite celebrity to your game? Start by learning how to recolour a dress or add a logo to a teeshirt quickly and easily, then move into the fascinating world of using and making non-Maxis meshes.

Do you want to learn how to hack into an object to make it more comfortable or more fun? Take an easy tutorial first. There is no secret button you can twiddle to magically change the comfort of a chair or the energy of a bed. It takes a bit of thought and understanding. You're going to have to plug in numbers to do it and every object has different ones. But you CAN learn if you want to!

The main thing is, don't be shy. ASK in whatever section interests you for good beginning tutorials. We all started somewhere.

If you would like to learn to recolour an object, annettebrks has created a wonderful step-by-step beginning tutorial. When you finish it, you'll not only have a new dining chair, you'll also know how to recolour! Find annettebrks recolour tutorial here:
http://simblesseoblige.com/viewtopic.php?t=515

From annettebrks' tutorial you'll be able to go on to our Spooky bookcase and then to an intermediate tutorial involving 2 tile objects and A and Z buffers from Ruthml:

Maybe skins are more your thing? Bruja has created a beginner's tutorial so you can learn the basics of recolouring an existing skin:

Would you like to learn to hack an object to make it more comfortable or some other modification? A great place to start is with the Sims College beginnning hacking tutorial hosted at Raeven's Secret Society of the Wooshba:

In fact, you'll find many great lessons in the Wooshba Workshop by Raeven:

How about creating your own Dial up NPC? Follow along with my own tutorial to create a Home Grocery Deliveryman:

We want you to learn because that's what will keep the Sims 1 community strong.

For object makers: get a magic cookie.
This is a number assigned just to you that you will enter into your cloning program. Your cloning program will use it to figure out the the Object ID number for every object you clone.

An object's Object ID number is how the game can tell one object from another so it is crucuial every object have a UNIQUE id number. By using your unique magic cookie when figuring out the objects' Object ID numbers it can make sure it's generating unique numbers for all of your objects.

For more details on how and why this is done see the thread in the Object Creation and Recolor Shop forum entitled " Magic Cookies: They're a must! "
